Blepharoplasty surgery, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that helps to change the appearance of the eyes. There are various types of blepharoplasty procedures that can be performed including Asian eyelid surgery, laser eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, and upper eyelid surgery. Though each method of surgery varies in procedure, there are some common things you can expect to experience before, during, and after treatment.

Before Blepharoplasty Surgery

The first step you will need to take before scheduling any blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery) treatment is to consult with a plastic surgeon skilled in this type of cosmetic treatment. During this consultation, the surgeon will be able to determine what type of surgery method will work best for you, and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.

In the weeks prior to your surgery, you may have to have blood work and a physical performed to ensure you are in optimal health for treatment. During this time, your doctor will instruct you to refrain from taking blood thinning medications such as aspirin, and may recommend the use of vitamin supplements to help build your immunities prior to treatment.

During Blepharoplasty Surgery

Most eyelid surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, and your cosmetic surgeon will inform you whether you will be required to stay in the hospital overnight. Procedure times also vary, but you can expect for most eyelid surgeries to take between two and four hours.

You will be given either a general or a local anesthetic prior to the doctor beginning surgery, depending on which method your surgeon prefers and recommends. Once the anesthesia takes affect, your surgeon will begin to make the incisions to remove tissue, fat, and skin to shape the eye to your desired outcome.

After Blepharoplasty Surgery

During the first few days after surgery you can expect to experience bruising, swelling, and some pain in the eye area. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide detailed instructions on how to minimize the affects of these issues and likely issue a pain medication to help with pain management.

Total recovery from eyelid surgery can take a few weeks, during which time it is essential that you completely follow your doctor’s instructions to ensure that the surgery is successful. Be advised that it may also take a few months for you to see the complete effects of the surgery.
