Are you thinking of having breast augmentation surgery to get the bosom of your dreams? If so, you might be wondering about what is involved in this type of cosmetic surgery. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about breast enhancement, or breast augmentation, with brief, easily understood answers in layman’s terms instead of technical medical lingo:

Q. Who is a good candidate for breast enlargement, or breast augmentation?

A. If you are in good health overall and have reasonable, realistic expectations about what this type of plastic surgery can do for you, then you are probably a good candidate for breast augmentation.

Q. Will there be loss of sensation in breasts after having breast implants?

A. There is a slight risk that some sensation might be lost after breast enhancement, but this risk is very low.

Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

A. There are the usual risks associated with any type of surgery, of course. Breast augmentation surgery also has these risks:

Infection

Deflation of an implant

Numbness of nipples

Displacement of an implant

Rippling

Capsular contracture, which occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant and compresses it, causing it to harden

Q. Will breast implants have a natural feel?

A. Generally, breast implants feel very real and natural. Silicone implants might have just a bit more of a natural feel, but saline implants can feel quite natural, too.

Q. Will breast implants affect mammograms?

A. Yes. You should talk to your plastic surgeon about this and ask for a recommendation for a clinic that does mammograms for those with breast implants.

Q. Will having breast implants interfere with breast feeding a baby?

A. As a general rule, no. Having breast implants should have no affect on your ability to breast feed.

Q. What is the recovery period for breast augmentation?

A. Most patients have quite a bit of discomfort during the first couple of days after surgery. Your breasts may be swollen for several weeks and you should avoid strenuous physical activity for around six weeks.

Q, Is there scarring from breast implants?

A. The scars from breast augmentation are placed where they will be inconspicuous, such as underneath the breast or around the nipples.
