ASPS Plastic Surgery Statistics

February 20, 2012 @ 09:50 AM — by admin

Even though the economy has been slow to recover and many people are struggling financially, recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that people are still undergoing plastic surgery in great numbers. In a way, that may be a testament to the skills and abilities of many surgeons nationwide. When you meet with a skilled Philadelphia plastic surgeon, all of your needs will be met and addressed in some fashion. Let's take a moment to look at the recent ASPS numbers about cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments.

Plastic Surgery Numbers: An Overview

According to recent numbers from the ASPS, 13.8 million cosmetic plastic surgery treatments were performed in 2011. These numbers accounted for both surgical treatments (such as the Philadelphia tummy tuck) as well as non-surgical treatments (such as cosmetic injections and laser therapies).

Crunching the Numbers for Cosmetic Surgery

Approximately 1.6 cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in 2011. The top five procedures performed last year were as follows:

  • Breast augmentation surgery (307,000 surgeries performed, up 4 percent from 2010)
  • Rhinoplasty / nose job (244,000 surgeries performed, down 3 percent from 2010)
  • Liposuction (205,000 surgeries performed, up 1 percent from 2010)
  • Blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery (196,000 surgeries performed, down 6 percent from 2010)
  • Facelift (119,000 surgeries performed, up 5 percent from 2010)

Interestingly, the facelift usurped the tummy tuck for the final slot in the top five. This is the first appearance by the facelift in the top five since 2004.

Crunching the Numbers for Non-Surgical Treatments

Sometimes patients opt to undergo a non-surgical treatment, which means all of the benefits of facelift without the downtime. There were 12.2 million non-surgical treatments performed in 2010, an increase of 6 percent. The top five treatments were as follows:

  • BOTOX® injections (5.7 million injections performed, up 5 percent from 2010)
  • Dermal filler injections (1.9 million injections performed, up 7 percent from 2010)
  • Chemical peels (1.1 million peels performed, down 3 percent from 2010)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 treatments performed, up 15 percent from 2010)
  • Microdermabrasion (900,000 procedures performed, up 9 percent from 2010)

Crunching the Numbers for Reconstructive Surgeries

Of course, not all surgeries are along the same lines of cosmetic treatments and enhancements, like breast augmentation surgery. Many surgeries are reconstructive in nature. Roughly 5.5 million reconstructive surgeries were performed in 2010, The top five are as follows:

  • Tumor removal (4.2 million surgeries performed, up 3 percent from 2010)
  • Laceration repair (303,000 surgeries performed, down 15 percent from 2010)
  • Maxillofacial surgery (195,000 surgeries performed, up 125 percent from 2010)
  • Scar revision (175,000 surgeries performed, up 9 percent from 2010)
  • Hand surgery (120,000 surgeries performed, up 13 percent from 2010)

Breast reconstruction surgery was also common in 2010, with 96,000 surgeries performed, an increase of 3 percent from 2010.
