Breast Implants in Philadelphia, PA
Located in Bala Cynwyd and serving Philadelphia, Delaware and South Jersey, Dr. Paul M. Glat, MD, FACS, performs breast implant surgery for patients desiring breast enhancement.
What are Breast Implants?
Breast augmentation surgery, also known as breast implants, is meant to enhance the breasts’ shape and size. Although there are other methods of achieving this, implants are by far the safest and most effective option. Generally, these implants consist of pouches filled with fluid, either silicone or saline, which are then put in place using surgery to alter the breasts’ texture, shape, and size.
Benefits of Breast Implants
Dr. Glat offers several kinds of breast implants, ensuring that patients are as happy as possible with the results of their surgery. Breast implants allow a woman to decide how she would like her breasts to look in all aspects, including shape and cup size and their overall texture and firmness. Here are some of the benefits:
- Makes breasts fuller and improves symmetry and shape
- Balances out the figure
- Higher confidence and self-esteem
- Reconstruction following a mastectomy
- Helps breasts impacted by weight loss or pregnancy regain their fullness
Options for the Breast Implant Procedure
Patients have several options when it comes to breast implants including shape, size and the material they’re made from. The placement and size of the incisions, as well as the final position of your implants, are affected by these choices.
One of the most significant decisions women have to make when considering breast implants is whether they should be placed above or underneath the chest wall muscles. Implants placed under the muscle tissue allow for a more natural texture and shape, but this also comes with greater discomfort and longer recovery after surgery as the muscles adjust to the implants. However, in most cases, the implants are placed under the muscle because the incidence of capsular contracture is decreased. On rare occasions, the implants are placed above the muscle.
In most cases, breast implants are inserted through an incision in the inframammary fold underneath the breast. This method affords Dr. Glat optimal control over placement during the procedure, but it can also lead to a visible scar on the breast when the breasts are exposed, especially when lying down. Another option for implant placement is through an incision in the armpit. When patients select this method, they don’t have to worry about scarring on the breasts. Unfortunately, going in through the armpit means a greater distance from the breasts. Using this method decreases the level of control the surgeon has over implant position compared to the inframammary method.
For patients who desire less obvious incisions, they can opt to receive their breast implants through an incision made around the areola of the nipple or through the belly button. When this is done through incisions around the areolas, healing is usually fast and uneventful, and the scarring is very hard to notice.
Saline and Silicone Breast Implants
These days, women who want to improve the appearance of their breasts have a choice between saline or silicone-filled implants. Both options are FDA-approved for safety, and each one possesses its own benefits. At his office, which serves the greater Philadelphia and South Jersey area, Dr. Paul M. Glat, and his expert team, will help women interested in receiving breast implants choose the option that best meets their needs and goals.
Saline-filled breast implants offer the greatest safety because saline is natural and non-toxic. If the implant should rupture, the saline is harmlessly absorbed by your body. If this occurs, you will notice it almost right away because the implant deflates very quickly. Silicone is generally considered safe, and while ruptures are an unusual event, the silicone can present a threat to your health if rupturing does happen.
The most modern saline implants look and feel very real, but many patients believe that silicone will provide the greatest level of realism. However, whereas saline implants are filled after they’ve been placed, silicone implants are filled prior to the surgery. This means that the incisions made during the surgery will be considerably smaller when saline implants are used.
Preparing for Breast Implants
For many women, breast augmentation surgery elicits both nervousness and excitement. You’re likely thrilled at the prospect of your new and improved breasts, but you may also worry about how you’ll feel and look. To ease your concerns, Dr. Glat will spend time helping you get a better idea of how you can expect your breast implants to look, and how your overall physique will change after the surgery. Before you receive breast implant surgery, it’s important to note that much of your wardrobe, especially shirts, bras, and swimsuits, may no longer fit correctly.
Recovery from Breast Implant Surgery
You will be required to rest for at least two days following your surgery. Tenderness, bruising, swelling, tiredness and pain are typical after this type of surgery. Dr. Glat might recommend a common drugstore pain reliever or prescribe another pain medication. It’s strongly recommended that you have someone to stay with you after the surgery to prepare meals, take care of housework and perform other tasks you can’t do yourself. You’ll likely feel like getting up and moving around after three to four days, but this should only be done carefully and with adequate physical support. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for one week.
Immediately following your procedure, you’ll notice some results. If you remain patient and follow the Dr. Glat’s post-operative care instructions, the complete results can be seen in three to four weeks.
