Rejuvenating the Upper and/or Lower Eyelids

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The goals of the surgery differ for the upper and lower eyelids. The upper eyelids must be positioned at the proper level and excess skin folds (hooding) removed. The lower lids must also be at an appropriate level and deep grooves (tear troughs) and fat protrusions (bags) corrected.

In upper eyelid surgery, incisions are made in the eyelid crease to minimize visible scarring.  If excess skin is removed during lower eyelid surgery, discreet incisions are made in the crease under the lid. If the patient does not have excess skin in this region and only requires treatment for under-eye bags, then incisions can be hidden inside the lower eyelid.

Many patients who undergo eyelid surgery at our practice in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania are interested in other treatments to reduce the signs of aging. Facelift and brow lift procedures can be performed along with eyelid surgery for additional cosmetic enhancement.

After Eyelid Surgery

After undergoing blepharoplasty at our practice near Philadelphia, the healing period is usually rapid and results are apparent early in the postoperative period. Side effects may include temporary blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Soreness can be treated with medication and swelling can be reduced with a cold compress. Dr. Paul M. Glat will go over other steps with the patient to ensure a fast and safe recovery, including the use of ointment and eye drops to keep the incisions lubricated and the eyes from drying out. Stitches are removed within two and seven days of the procedure, and patients are usually able to resume normal activities within one to two weeks after eyelid surgery. Complications are extremely rare, though they may include hematoma and asymmetry of the eyelids.
