What is Stem Cell Hair Restoration?

Paul M. Glat, MD, FACS, is pleased to offer a full time hair restoration facility that enables him to offer stem cell therapy from cells that are derived from the fat cells of our adult patients to help with hair restoration utilizing the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) extraction process, as these stem cells are rich in mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors. The use of stem cell therapy has expanded greatly over the last few years in treating medical disease. By activating already existing stem cells on the scalp this process can trigger follicle stem cells to give off chemical signals to nearby follicle cells which have shrunk during the aging process, which in turn respond to these signals by regenerating and once again making healthy hair, which has led to a significant and visible improvement in follicular hair growth for many of Dr. Glat’s patients, particularly when combined with PRP injections into the scalp.

What are the Benefits of Stem Cell Hair Restoration?

Chief among the benefits of using your own stem cells to generate fresh hair growth is the natural and long lasting results that you get, particularly when combined with PRP therapy with PRP injections into the scalp for enriched hair growth. Stem cells are tiny progenitor cells found in our body that can divide (through mitosis) and change (differentiate) into various cell types. All cells in our body are constantly dividing where new cells are formed, then old cells age and die. It is a natural physiologic process of programmed cell death and is known as “apoptosis”. Your stem cells are your body’s natural healing cells and can act as your repair system in your body by replenishing adult tissues. Of all stem cell types, autologous harvesting (cells obtained from one’s own body) from Adipose tissue (Fat cells) involves the least risk. Adipose tissue is one of the richest sources of MSCs. When compared to bone marrow, there are more than 500 times more stem cells in 1 gram of fat when compared to 1 gram of aspirated bone marrow. Hair follicles also contain stem cells, and utilizing advanced technology to extract stem cells from your fat cells and then deploying stem cells to treat thinning hair and hair loss has led to successes in treating baldness through an activation of the stem cells progenitor cells, which is Dr. Glat’s specialty.

What is the Procedure for Stem Cell Hair Restoration?

Men and women with hair loss undergo the stem cell hair restoration procedure in our office as an outpatient. Autologous stem cells from the patient’s own fat are used for the procedure, and it is a safe and easy procedure to experience. First, the patient undergoes a small procedure in which fat cells are removed from the abdomen or hip region under local anesthesia, which is done under tumescence anesthesia. The fat is then processed in a special device that separates out the stem cells from the fat. The stem cells are then injected into the scalp under local anesthesia. Once this adipose derived stem cells are administered back into the patient, they have the potential to repair human tissue by forming new cells of mesenchymal origin, such as connective tissues, cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, hair follicles, nerve, fat, muscle, blood vessels, and certain internal organs. Hair follicle papilla, which is a large structure at the base of the hair follicle bulb, is made up mainly of connective tissue and a capillary loop, and since it is mainly connective tissue, mesenchymal stem cells may play a role in the repair and regeneration of the hair follicle papilla. Because the hair follicle develops mainly from the dermis and is mesodermal in origin, and Mesenchymal stem cells are also mesodermal in origin, this means that there is tight ectodermal and mesodermal interaction involve in hair follicle development with stem cells.
