NOW PLAYING: Chin Implants

Genioplasty or chin enhancement surgery is performed in one of two different ways. Either a small chin implant can be placed over the chin bone itself or in another type of surgery, the chin bone can be cut and moved forward or downward in order to enhance the appearance of the chin. When a chin implant is placed, a small silicone implant is placed through a small incision inside the mouth so there are no external incisions. The patient may experience some temporary numbness of the lower lip and some swelling, but other than that, the recovery is minimal. Approximately one week after surgery the patient is seen and the incision is inspected and the patient can resume normal activities. In the bone - - type of operation, once the bone is cut, a small plate is used to keep the bone in a new position. The recovery is slightly longer, approximately one to two weeks and swelling can be more significant and the patient can go back to normal activities after approximately two weeks. Patient satisfaction is very high with this operation and it can really enhance other types of facial procedures or, again, can be a standalone operation.
