What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck procedure (abdominoplasty) is a powerful and popular procedure offered by Philadelphia cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul Glat. The surgery is designed to remove excess skin, fat,  and tissue from the abdomen and tighten the underlying abdominal muscles. The result is a flatter, smoother stomach, and a more attractive figure. In some cases, a tummy tuck may be performed in conjunction with liposuction and other body lifting procedures for a more comprehensive body reshaping. Dr. Glat will work closely with you to determine the best way to achieve your personal aesthetic goals.

Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Our procedure for abdominoplasty in Philadelphia may be performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on what is most appropriate for you. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Glat will begin the tummy tuck procedure by making an incision along the patient’s bikini line. He may reposition the navel, so it is in a youthful location on your newly-sculpted abdomen. After moving and suturing the abdominal muscles to make them tighter, Dr. Glat will stretch the abdominal skin downward, trimming away excess skin and repositioning the navel.

Recovery From a Tummy Tuck: What Can You Expect?

Depending on how much tissue must be removed to restore your abdomen, Dr. Glat may recommend you spend the night in the hospital. Each patient is unique, and some are free to return home under the care of another adult. Your stitches will be removed in about one week.

You should feel well enough to return to work or other activities after no more than two weeks, but it may take a month or more to feel entirely restored and able to enjoy the full benefits of a tummy tuck. You will need to wear special compression garments under your clothing to promote healing and prevent complications such as blood clots.

Mini Tummy Tuck in Philadelphia

A mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, is an alternative available at our Bala Cynwyd office for those who do not need a traditional tummy tuck. This procedure may be recommended if your abdominal muscles do not require repositioning, and you have less excess skin, tissue, and fat.

What is the Mini Tummy Tuck Procedure?

When performing a partial abdominoplasty, Dr. Glat makes a smaller incision. He will not need to reposition the navel. This procedure produces less scarring and has a shorter recovery time, all with the same beautiful results expected from a full tummy tuck.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

Will there be scars?

Any surgery will leave scars where the incisions were made. The tummy tuck scar is placed low enough on the abdomen that it can be concealed by the underwear or swimsuit.

How long is the procedure?

A tummy tuck takes 2-4 hours.

Will a tummy tuck get rid of stretch marks?

Any stretch marks in the targeted area will be removed because the skin will be trimmed away as the abdominal area is tightened.

Are there any risks?

Like any surgery, a tummy tuck carries the usual surgical risks, such as bleeding, infection and reactions to anesthesia.
